Rex plants a leaf at each end of the path. “Start here, finish there!” Two snails stretch out their feelers. Pip raises a wing. “Three, two, one… go!” Nothing seems to move. Rex bends down. “Did you hear the start?” One snail finally moves… the width of a seed.

“I can carry you!” says Pip. Trixie shakes her head. “Then it would be your race, not theirs.” Pip folds his wings. While he waits, he makes up a song. A very long one. When it ends, the snails have reached the first leaf. Rex cheers as if the whole valley has won.

Trixie notices a little shining line behind the snails. “Look, they leave a trail!” Rex spots an ant, a feather and a stripy stone too. He has run along this path a hundred times without seeing them. “Funny,” he says. “When we go slower, we find more things.”

The first snail reaches the finish leaf. Then it starts nibbling. “Hey! That is my sign!” cries Rex. The second snail arrives and joins the meal. Pip laughs so hard that his hat falls off. Somehow, the race has turned into a picnic.

Rex puts his signs away and keeps the stripy stone. “Same again tomorrow?” asks Pip. “Yes, with time to look at the flowers,” says Rex. The snails, resting in the shade, say nothing. They have one very important thing left to do: finish their leaf in peace.
