Trixie’s favourite flowers grow beyond the little garden bridge. It is low, wide and sturdy. Yet today she does not want to cross. Pip offers to carry her. “I want to use my own feet… but they will not move.” Rex stops beside her. The flowers can wait.

“Let us not think about the whole bridge,” says Rex. “Only the first step.” Trixie places one foot on the first board, then takes it back. Rex does not laugh. “You tried. We can have a rest.” They sit together. Pip makes a tiny leaf hat. It does not even cover his beak.

Trixie stands up. Together, she and Rex find three landmarks: the start, the middle and the end. Pip waits beside the flower on the other side. “I will stay here. And keep my silly hat on.” Trixie laughs. With Rex beside her, she reaches the first landmark. The bridge feels shorter now.

In the middle, Trixie pauses again. She looks at Rex, then at the flower. One foot, then another… soon all four feet are on the grass. Pip raises his wings but skips the loud victory shout. “Would you like a hug or just to look at the flower?” Trixie chooses the flower first. Then the hug.

On the way home, Trixie chooses the path around the bridge. “Do you not want to try again?” asks Pip. “Once was enough for today.” Rex takes the same path. It is a longer way, but nobody is in a hurry. In Trixie’s pocket there is no medal: just the leaf from her first little step.
