Tonight the friends are sleeping in the treehouse garden. Pip brings his pillow, Trixie a torch and Rex… three snacks. The moon rises. Everything is quiet. Then: rustle, crackle! Pip hides his beak under the blanket. “Do mountains go for walks at night?”

Trixie shines the torch from the entrance. Nobody goes into the dark alone. A branch moves and dry leaves brush against the tent. Rustle, crackle! “The wind is playing with our tent,” she says. Rex lifts his blanket. “Good. I did not pack a snack for a mountain.”

A long “hoot” floats across the garden. Rex hugs his basket. “This time it is my mountain!” Trixie listens again. A little owl lands far from the tent. Pip recognises it from the big tree. They stay where they are so they do not disturb it.

The sounds have names now, but Pip’s heart still beats fast. “I am still a little scared.” Rex makes room beside him. Trixie breathes slowly with him. Pip breathes in, then blows as if cooling some soup. He tries again gently. Nobody asks him to feel brave straight away.

At last, a terrible “grrrr” comes from under the blanket. Pip opens one eye. Trixie brings the torch closer. Rex blushes. “That was my tummy.” They share a snack and snuggle down. Outside, leaves whisper and the owl watches. Pip closes his eyes. The night is not silent, but he no longer feels alone.
