Beside a little puddle, Trixie sees a golden patch. “Treasure!” whispers Pip. Rex brings a basket almost as big as himself. But when a breeze ripples the water, the treasure breaks into a thousand shining pieces. Trixie wrinkles her nose. “That is a very strange clue.”

Rex dips a little stick into the puddle. Splash! The sparkle disappears. He lifts the stick: no gold coin, just a wet leaf. Pip peers into the basket. “Invisible treasure, perhaps?” Trixie sits on a dry stone. “Let us wait until the water is still again.”

Pip looks up. A yellow flower bends over the puddle. He points without picking it. Trixie looks at the flower, then at the water. “The same shape!” Rex pulls a face above the puddle. Another face looks back. “Oh! A second Rex!”

“So there is nothing to take home?” asks Rex. Just then, a fallen feather drifts beside the path. Pip picks it up. Trixie finds a pretty stone nearby. Rex adds his wet leaf. Their basket holds no gold. It holds reminders of a very funny investigation.

In the treehouse, they put their finds on a shelf. With Trixie’s help, Rex writes: “The splashing treasure.” Pip wants to add the reflection, but it will not fit in the basket. “Never mind,” says Trixie. “We can keep that one in our story.”
