Six apples, three friends… and a slippery picnic blanket! Sharing lunch takes a little practice.

Rex lays out the picnic on a slope. “We can see the whole valley!” He puts six apples on the blanket. One rolls away, then another. Pip catches one in his hat. Trixie stops the last with her foot. “Lovely view,” she says. “Travelling lunch!”

The friends move the blanket to level ground. Trixie counts the apples: one, two, three, four, five, six. Rex counts again. He gets seven because he counted his nose. “It is very round!” Trixie shows him how to touch each apple only once.

Pip gives one apple to Rex, one to Trixie and one to himself. Three apples remain. He goes around again. Now each plate holds two apples. Rex looks at his share, then at the others. “Nobody was forgotten. Even my nose can have a rest!”

Pip is full after his first apple. Rex would like another. He waits instead of taking one from his friend’s plate. “Would you like to keep your second apple?” Pip thinks. “You can have it.” Rex smiles and says thank you. Sharing also means asking and listening to the answer.

After lunch, the friends pack their plates and pick up everything they brought. Rex folds the blanket. One last thing rolls down the slope: him! He sat on his round basket. Luckily, Pip and Trixie are right beside him. “Next time,” says Rex, “I will choose a flat seat too.”
